The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is warning that the new Viagra Connect (sildenafil citrate) will not work for people with a history of heart disease.
The MHRA says that the “new” drug will not be approved for use in people with a history of heart disease.
The MHRA said: “This is a major safety issue for patients who have not been taking the medication before, particularly if they have recently suffered a heart attack, stroke or heart failure.”
The MHRA’s warning is based on its own clinical research and is “unnecessary or dangerous to patients”, it said.
The agency said: “This new treatment for erectile dysfunction has shown no benefit in patients with known cardiovascular disease.”
The drug was approved for use in women only, the regulator said.

A spokesperson said: “We are committed to patient safety and that approval is appropriate for patients who have experienced heart attack, stroke or blood vessel disease and who are taking medicines for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
“Medicines for erectile dysfunction are often prescribed for conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, and these are often used to treat erectile dysfunction and the condition it is meant to treat.”
